Dulce de Leche ...

I don't know what I'm going to do when I come home without the dulce de leche from here! Argentines eat it with almost anything, and it is incredible delicious.   It's really just a caramel spread, but I think it tastes a little different
.  I try to eat it somewhat sparingly, seeing as it IS a dessert, but I think Argentines just consider it like another condiment ... no limits on when you can eat it.  I eat it on toast in the morning, on fruits, once I even had it inside an empanada (I wonder how many calories THAT was?).  Anway, the picture below is the kind that Mirta buys for me ... it's won 'best dulce de leche of the year' awards for 4 years in a row! Haha.

  1. Ok, to set the record straight: dulce de leche is officially a CONDIMENT which DOES mean that you can eat AS MUCH OF IT AS YOU WANT! Lord knows I did, when I was down there. Here's something you might try: put it on a banana or perhaps even with ice cream and a banana together (a banana, dulce de leche split?). I'm sure you've probably tried the dulce de leche flavored ice cream, but it not, make sure to sample that as well! Also, the Vauquita dulce de leche chocolates are great (and I believe they even make a healthy kind if you're really that concerned, which you shouldn't be)!

I've tried to find dulce de leche since coming back to the US to no avail! I think I'm going to make my own tomorrow though so I'll let you know how that goes...or DOESN'T go...

  2. Inside a churro. Delicous AND phallic.

  3. This seems like the equivalent of Nutella in France...on crepes, bread, breakfast, etc =)
